Quick answer
For a first long trip to Egypt, spend several days in Cairo and Giza and add Alexandria as a same-day return trip if it appeals to you. Continue with two days in Luxor, three or four sailing towards Aswan, two in Aswan including Abu Simbel, and two or three on the Red Sea. Fit the order to actual flights and boat schedules, and keep a buffer before your international flight. Compare official admission with commercial listings and confirm inclusions in writing.
1. Five chapters rather than sixteen rushed days
Egypt needs realistic distances and buffers. Give Giza a full morning; visit Alexandria on a day trip from Cairo if the timings work; enjoy the Nile between temple visits and set aside a separate day for Abu Simbel from Aswan. Finish with time to rest by the Red Sea.
This route is modular. On a 10–12 day trip, omit Alexandria or the coast; with longer, add time in Luxor or Aswan. Many visits can be booked as guided day tours or may already be included in your organised itinerary. Before booking more, confirm admissions, transfers, guiding, timings and change terms in writing.
2. A workable sixteen-day route
Day 1 · Cairo
Arrive and keep the evening light; avoid timed admission.
Day 2 · Giza
Pyramids plateau and Sphinx; check access and transport.
Day 3 · Museum
Make the Grand Egyptian Museum your main visit.
Days 4–5 · Alexandria and buffer
Take a same-day return trip to Alexandria; use the other day for Cairo or your transfer south.
Days 6–7 · Luxor
Travel south; split Karnak/Luxor and the west bank.
Days 8–11 · Nile
Sail towards Aswan; verify your boat’s stops, tickets and hours.
Days 12–13 · Aswan
Riverfront and felucca; dedicate a separate day to Abu Simbel.
Days 14–15 · Red Sea
Reach the coast, rest or snorkel with a responsible operator.
Day 16 · Departure
Keep a buffer before your international flight.
3. Alexandria as a day trip
You can leave Cairo in the morning and return the same day, independently or on a guided excursion. As one example, a Civitatis day trip is advertised at about 12 hours and includes Qaitbay, the Kom el Shoqafa catacombs and the library. Keep the whole day free and compare your operator’s actual itinerary. Staying overnight is optional if you want more time.
If you want to enter the Library, check its official visitor schedule before booking: its own guided tours are listed in Arabic, English and French. A Spanish-speaking guide for the wider excursion does not guarantee a Spanish-language tour inside. Check pickup, admissions, lunch and return time; avoid booking them again if your organised itinerary already includes them.

4. Book the actual sailing programme
Compare embarkation port and time, real sailing nights, stops, guide language, admission, meals, tips, transfers and change policy. A large ship, dahabiya and felucca offer different experiences. Ask for a day-by-day programme before paying.
Edfu and Kom Ombo are common stops but are not guaranteed on every boat. A short felucca trip in Aswan can be a highlight when vessel and conditions are suitable.

5. Give Abu Simbel its own day
The temples are in Egypt’s far south. Confirm pickup, travel time, admission, guide language and time at the site from Aswan; avoid another fixed booking that day. Check the official monument portal for current hours and conditions.

6. Choose a Red Sea base that fits your trip
Compare transport from Aswan or Luxor, departure connections and whether you want rest, snorkelling or diving. Not every hotel offers easy reef access, and sea trips depend on conditions. Check equipment, required experience and weather policy; leave coral untouched.
