Egypt for first-timers: planning Cairo, Giza and Luxor
A practical route for spacing out visits, buying official tickets and using the best hours of the day without losing them in traffic.

Quick answer
To protect arrival and avoid mixing areas, I would use four Cairo nights: arrival plus three full days for Giza, a museum and historic Cairo. Then give one day to the transfer and three Luxor nights for two separate visit days, East Bank and West Bank, before departure. Buy tickets through official channels and adapt outdoor visits to heat and access changes.
Cairo and Luxor do not compete for the same day
Cairo base
Sleep four nights: one protects arrival and three support separate days for Giza, a museum and historic Cairo.
Intercity transfer
Reserve a day or generous window. Flights and trains require checking time, terminal or station, luggage and arrival at the hotel.
Luxor base
Sleep three nights: transfer arrival, East Bank and West Bank, leaving margin before departure.
A sequence that gives the sites room to breathe
Arrival · Cairo base
Sleep in Cairo after the transfer and a nearby walk. Do not fix a Giza ticket when the flight may consume the margin.
Giza · Cairo base
Sleep in Cairo. Visit early, choose one interior only if intended, then eat or rest; general admission does not include every interior.
Cairo 2 · Museum
Sleep in Cairo. Choose one museum as the anchor and add no more than two nearby priorities according to official access.
Cairo 3 · Historic Cairo
Sleep in Cairo. Use one coherent area, one indoor visit and a meal or break; do not return to Giza.
Move Cairo → Luxor
Protect ticket, luggage and arrival, then sleep in Luxor. Do not schedule the West Bank after an uncertain transfer.
Luxor day 1 · East Bank
Sleep in Luxor. Karnak and one nearby second priority are enough; keep a rest window during the hardest heat.
Luxor day 2 · West Bank
Sleep in Luxor. Choose one anchor site and no more than two compatible visits before protecting next-day departure. Plan B: a museum or short walk on the same bank if access changes.
One official ticket description beats an inherited checklist
Hours, prices and inclusions change. Read the site page and official ticket portal when planning, then again before visiting. A photograph of an old sign does not decide what your purchase includes.
Outdoors, I would prioritise shade, water and breaks over a third visit. A common mistake is chaining Cairo to Luxor with an outdoor booking. Add the terminal, accommodation, official ticket and shortened version of each bank to Trekky.
