Munich in 4 days: transport, the centre and a Neuschwanstein excursion

Quick answer
For four days, keep Munich as your only base and use three days for the centre, museums or parks, and neighbourhoods. Give the fourth to Neuschwanstein only when admission, transport and energy are confirmed; Linderhof or a city day are different alternatives. Check official admission separately from the journey because a tour does not guarantee interior entry.
The city is the base; the castle is optional
The excursion decides the order: stay near a direct connection to Hauptbahnhof or the airport and keep all four nights in the city. Make arrival day light, and never place the excursion just before an early flight.
The important choice happens before the trip: independent castle visit, organised excursion or city day. Compare effort and conditions, not only the destination image.

Choose it when official admission and transport align. Allow a full day and verify the current walk and access conditions.
Linderhof
Treat it as a separate excursion with its own logistics, not an automatic substitute. Check its official site before moving bookings.
City day
This is the sensible option in poor weather, with sold-out admission or low energy. Add one museum or neighbourhood without a long transfer.

Transfer, Marienplatz and dinner near your base. Do not add a museum when the flight may be delayed.
Day 2 · City
Historic centre, one market or museum, and a long break. Keep to three priorities.
Day 3 · Neighbourhoods or park
Choose a museum, Englischer Garten or one neighbourhood rather than turning all three into obligations.
Day 4 · Chosen excursion
Neuschwanstein, Linderhof or a city day. Leave margin and do not connect directly to a flight.
