Quick answer
Keep three days for Panama City and two days with one night in Guna Yala, leaving a buffer before your outbound flight. For San Blas, confirm the exact island, 4WD and boat transfers, meals, accommodation, local fees and luggage with an authorised operator. Local conditions and sea state can change the plan, so spend another night in the city before flying.
1. The city, Canal and Guna territory move at different speeds
Panama combines a dense capital, the Canal and an Indigenous island territory; each requires a different pace. Guna Yala is not a generic beach excursion: it is governed by the Guna people, and the host community sets the rules for each visit.
Avoid returning from the islands on the same day as an international flight. Road, access control, port and boat conditions are beyond the control of an airline booking.

2. Six-day route
Day 1 · Casco Antiguo
Arrival, a short walk through the squares and waterfront, then dinner nearby. Avoid a timed visit when the flight may be delayed.
Day 2 · Canal and Amador
Visit Miraflores in a slot that fits the announced ship transit, then choose the Amador Causeway or Biomuseo according to opening hours and energy.
Day 3 · A flexible city day
Market, Cinta Costera, a museum or urban nature. Pack a small bag and reconfirm the next morning's pickup in writing.
Day 4 · Entering Guna Yala
Early 4WD departure, access control, port and boat to the assigned island. Keep the afternoon light.
Day 5 · Islands and community
Sea time, snorkelling when conditions allow and a cultural visit agreed with your hosts. Ask before photographing anyone.
Day 6 · Return
Travel back to Panama City with a buffer. Spend this night on the mainland before your next flight or connection.
3. What the Guna Yala booking must confirm
Request the island and community name, pickup time and place, 4WD vehicle, port, boat, meals, drinking water, accommodation, bathroom, electricity, coverage, luggage allowance, included fees and bad-weather policy in writing.
Carry small cash notes. The experience may be basic: a simple cabin, limited power or a wet boat transfer are part of the logistics. Use a waterproof day bag and leave your main suitcase in the city.

4. Sea, road and a backup plan
The road and boat can be demanding. If a weather alert applies or the operator cancels for safety, retain an alternative day in Panama City. Safety matters more than completing a list of islands.
For motion sickness, ask a health professional which preventive option is appropriate and keep medication accessible. Also confirm what happens to the booking if the sea transfer cannot operate.

Bookings and operators worth checking
Miraflores Visitor Center
Admission includes the IMAX film. Check the estimated ship-transit period before choosing a time; Canal operations can alter it.
Guna Yala community experience
Panama's Tourism Authority publishes experiences and contacts. Confirm the operator remains active and authorised, and book an itinerary that identifies the community and island.
Interoceanic Canal Museum
An indoor alternative in Casco Antiguo for understanding the Canal's history. Check opening hours, language and admission for your date.
Your Guna Yala day bag
A small waterproofed bag, kept separate from the suitcase you leave in the city.
Save the transfer details, not only the booking
Take this guide into your Trekky trip and add the operator, contact, community, island, port and weather policy to the Guna Yala day. Sharing those details with your group is more useful than keeping only a payment receipt.
