Albanian Riviera in 8 days: road trip from Tirana to Ksamil
A practical Albanian Riviera road trip through Tirana, Vlorë, Llogara, Himarë, Sarandë and Ksamil, with bases, documents and safety.

Quick answer
In eight days, I would use four bases: Tirana, Vlorë, Himarë and Sarandë or Ksamil. Cross Llogara in daylight, sleep two nights in Himarë and two in the south, and visit Butrint from that final base. Night 7 returns to Tirana only when car return and departure are there; if they use another city, replace that final base after confirming the contract. A Spanish licence alone is not sufficient.
The route begins at the rental desk
Spain’s foreign ministry warns there is no mutual recognition and a Spanish licence is not valid on its own. Carry the relevant international permit and request written details for cover, excess, assistance, additional drivers and damage procedure.
I would not start an unfamiliar road at night. Use the first base to resolve the car, cash and navigation. Save the contract, assistance, notified accommodation and turnaround point for each leg in Trekky.
Four bases with the road working for you
Night 1 · Tirana
Sleep in Tirana. Handle arrival and the contract; do not start the coast without daylight or energy.
Night 2 · Vlorë
Sleep in Vlorë and review Llogara. Plan B: for fire, closure, bad weather or fatigue, keep this night and remove one far-south night.
Nights 3–4 · Himarë
Cross Llogara by day and sleep two nights in Himarë. Use one beach, one village and one meal in a day, not five detours.
Nights 5–6 · Sarandë or Ksamil
Choose one base rather than both. Visit Butrint from there and keep the second day for the coast or rest.
Night 7 · Tirana, when return and departure are there
Return and sleep in Tirana only when the contract and outbound transport confirm it. If they use another city, replace only this final base after checking both.
Day 8 · Depart from the confirmed base
Allow margin for fuel, inspection and the outbound connection. Do not return to Tirana when contract and departure specify another city.
Himarë, Sarandë or Ksamil: what each night buys
Himarë
It reduces backtracking through the central section and supports beach days with less luggage movement.
Sarandë
It provides an urban base for Butrint and the south. It may be more practical when services and one hotel move matter.
Ksamil
It brings some beaches closer but does not remove traffic or parking. A common mistake is adding viewpoints and recovering time by driving after dark.
